Energy Psychotherapy brings the techniques of Energy Psychology into the therapeutic process. These methods are based on the understanding that when we respond to difficult or threatening circumstances these responses are laid down throughout the interconnecting layers of our being - physiological, sensate, emotional, mental, belief systems - as integrated patterns. There are subtle energy systems within us that hold the 'programs' or 'templates' of these patterns. While we can access the patterns through any single layer of experience, if we access the program or template itself we can promote rapid change with minimum effort and, more importantly, without re-traumatisation. This makes it a very safe way of working, even with the most painful of experiences.
Energy psychology uses gentle pressure or tapping on ‘meridian’ points, while focusing on troublesome thoughts or memories, to pinpoint problem patterns and break up the links between layers, much like a massage releases muscles stuck in spasm.
The subtle energy systems have been recognised throughout history as, for instance, the chakras of Indian tradition (or khorlo in Tibetan Buddhism) and the meridian lines and points of chinese acupuncture and acupressure.
